Armagnac is the oldest wine based eau – de – vie produced in the heart of Gascony, South West France. It is produced by a single distillation of white wine in an Armagnac alambic still and then left to age for many years in oak barrels before being sold.

The name « Lafontan » appeared in the 17th century. This name is derived from the name « fountain ». Apparently, the family originally lived near a fountain or a source.

The vineyards of the family are situated in the most prestigious area of Gascogne Bas Armagnac. In this area there are many oak forests. The climate is gentle and temperate. In the West of the appellation, it is the damp oceanic influence, moderated by the Lands forest. In Bas Armagnac vinyards are situated on meagre and acidic clay soils. This area produces light, fruity, delicate and highly praised eau – de – vie.
